If you’re new to hiking I’m sure you’ve heard that you need to “be prepared” or “stay safe on the trails”. But what does that mean? How can you prepare for a day hike?
There are a few things you can do in advance to make sure you stay safe and are prepared on the trails. I’ve made this checklist so you can develop your own pre-hike routine. If you’re new to the trails, check out this post Hiking Etiquette for Beginners.
Check the Weather
While you should always be prepared for the unknown and pack layers and waterproof gear, it’s a good idea to check the weather before heading out on the trails.
Personally, I do not like hiking in the pouring rain. If it happens to rain as I’m hiking, I deal with it. But I have changed trails the night before as I monitored the weather to avoid hiking in areas that have forecasted rain.

Tell Someone Where You’re Going
It’s always a smart idea to let someone know exactly where you are going and an estimate of your trip plan. This should include the drive there and back. Oftentimes there’s no service on the hike and even on the drive. If something were to happen it’s smart to have someone with your schedule.
Know Regulations for Permits & Passes
Washington Trails Association (WTA) is a great resource. It provides information for conditions, permits, and passes you’ll need to avoid tickets and fines. There are always rangers out and about -even at trails in the middle of nowhere!
Wear the Right Shoes
Having the correct type of shoes is very important. Based on the weather and terrain of your hike, you may choose hiking sandals, trail runners, hiking shoes, or hiking boots. Whichever option you select should be waterproof, provide support, and have good traction. This will ensure your feet are comfortable and help you avoid injury. These are the hiking shoes that I’ve had for 3+ years and love!
