Hiking Etiquette – is there such a thing? And if so- what is it? Who is allowed on the trails and who has the right of way?
If you’re a beginner hiker, this may not be something you’ve ever even thought about. But trust me – etiquette matters on the trails! Just like on the road, there are trail “rules” and you don’t want to seem rude by not following them -people do get offended.
By following these 10 simple hiking etiquette rules, you’ll look like an experienced hiker on the trails in no time (even if you’re not!).
Hiking Etiquette 101: 10 Simple Tips
- People going uphill have the right of way. If you are coming down, step to the side to let them pass.
- People behind you with a faster pace have the right of way. If you are behind someone and are wanting to pass, make yourself known in a friendly manner as to not startle them.
- First, check trail signage to ensure dogs are allowed on the trail and then make sure your dog is always on a leash.
- People on horses have priority, followed by hikers, and then cyclists.
- Leave no trace behind -everything you pack in should be packed out with you. This includes food and toilet paper.
- Stay on the trail! Going off the trail can disturb the surrounding ecosystem, so leave everything as you found it.
- If you encounter wildlife in their natural habitat, remember you’re visiting, so stay a safe distance away!
- Be friendly! When you encounter other hikers give them a friendly “hello” or head nod.
- Stay hydrated and listen to your body! When you need to stop for a break, find a safe place to do so. Do not stand in the middle of the trail blocking it for others to pass by.
- No one, absolutely no one, wants to hear your loud trance music out on a nature trail. Pop a headphone in if you absolutely must listen to music but I’d highly recommend you take a break from your devices and enjoy the beauty of nature around you (and let others do the same)
I hope this simple list of hiking etiquette helps you next time you’re on the trails. Drop a 🙋♀️ or 🙋♂️ if you already follow this hiking etiquette!
