Things to Know Before Visiting San Diego

San Diego is the second-largest city in California and one of the US’s most popular destinations. Famous for its beautiful beaches, long-time Navy association, and perfect year-round weather, as well as local hidden gems; San Diego has something for everyone. Here are a few things you need to know before heading to San Diego!

Best time to go: July through October are the best times to visit San Diego. “May Gray” and “June Gloom” are real.

Climate: San Diego is known for its perfect weather with most days sitting a few degrees above or below 75°F. Often the climate varies significantly across the bay, hills, and canyons in San Diego resulting in microclimates.

Language: English is the predominant language but with the Mexican border 20 miles from downtown San Diego, Spanish is widely spoken.

Money: US Dollar ($USD). ATMs are spread throughout the city and most businesses accept all major credit cards.

Transportation: San Diego is not the most convenient city to get around by public transportation. However, there are a few options:

The Trolley is a great option for getting around San Diego, it’s basically an above-ground metro system with the charm of an old-fashioned trolley.

The Coaster is a commuter rail service that connects downtown San Diego to the coastal cities of North County San Diego.

Public ride-sharing APPs like Uber and Lyft are readily available all over the city.

Depending on the length of your visit, I’d suggest renting a car as San Diego is quite spread out.

Airport: SAN is an international airport located about 10-minutes from downtown San Diego.

Neighborhoods to Visit: Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Gaslamp, Hillcrest, La Jolla, Little Italy, Mission Valley, Ocean Beach, Old Town, Pacific Beach, and Point Loma.
