Born and raised in Washington State, Dale Chihuly took to blowing glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. Later, he worked at the Venini glass factory in Venice. His work is showcased in more than 200 museum collections, over a dozen large installations, and various exhibitions worldwide. In 2012, Chihuly Garden and Glass, a long-term exhibition, opened in Seattle Center.
The exhibition includes a visual experience through Chihuly’s signature glass series, large architectural installations, and personal collections. All spanning eight galleries, the centerpiece Glasshouse (which was closed when I was there), and an outdoor garden.
“I love to go to the ocean and walk along the beach. If you work with hot glass and its natural properties it begins to look like something that came from the sea.” –Chihuly
“I never met a color I didn’t like” –Dale Chihuly
Collections Cafe
“I discovered my first collection of beach glass on the shores of Puget Sound when I was four or five years old. I’ve never stopped collecting since.” –Dale
Featuring 28 collections from Dale Chihuly, this is by far one of the most fascinatingly decorated café’s I’ve ever been to! My table featured a collection of cast-iron bouquet doorstops. The collections surrounding the café ranged from 1950’s cameras to accordions and fish decoys to bottle openers. With so much to look at, I was extremely distracted when the server came by to take my order.
Collections Café menu offers a healthy selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches. I ended up choosing the Strawberry Lavender Lemonade and Chopped Salad. All of the ingredients were fresh, the portions were hefty, and the food was tasty!
Happen to be wandering around the Seattle Center? You can visit the café even without admission to the museum. I highly recommend visiting the Chihuly Garden and Glass Exhibit!

I am sure this has been hiding from me. I loved glass blown objects as a kid and tried to collect them. Most of them were little and over the years have been broken. Your dad and I surely enjoyed and awed at the glass blower we met in Alaska during our cruise. It was fun to make our colorful globes to have at home. Aunt Doris and Uncle Quenten surprised me with a glass blown hummingbird feeder and along with other found a new love. Next time we venture to Seattle this is on the top of my list to visit. Thanks for sharing! Your pictures were wonderful.
